BBS helps in Connecting Dumbarton
Connecting Dumbarton is a project focused on creating a welcoming gateway into the town centre from Dumbarton Central Station and enhancing active travel connections.
BBS was specified at the design stage in this exciting project, and worked alongside the Landscape Architect to utilise products that complimented the scheme, in particular a wide range of vibrant portuguese granites along with whinstone and caithness stone to breathe life into the scheme.
Connecting Dumbarton is a project focused on creating a welcoming gateway into the town centre from Dumbarton Central Station and enhancing active travel connections. It also forms part of the wider long-term “Railway to Rock” connectivity aspiration to create an attractive active travel route between Dumbarton Central Station and the Rock and Castle via the High Street, and the waterfront path. It is the first of the Levelling Up projects to be delivered, being completed in early 2024.
The project delivered a high-quality public realm along Station Road and College Street/College Way. The connection into the town centre, along College Street, has been strengthened and better defined. It is part the well-used National Cycle Network (NCN 7), linking Glasgow with Loch Lomond. Pavements have been widened and the crossing point at Station Road enhanced to give priority to pedestrians and cyclists. Connecting Dumbarton has created a much more attractive, safer and user-friendly route for pedestrians and cyclists to approach the town centre and its waterfront and explore what the town has to offer. It has also created a better setting for the listed Dumbarton Central Station and Municipal Buildings.
This was a scheme that was funded by the Government Levelling up programme - a UK government policy to reduce inequality based on where people live. It is being delivered via the Levelling Up Fund (LUF) which invests in infrastructure that improves everyday life across the UK, including regenerating town centres and investing in cultural and heritage assets. It aims to address weakness in the local economy, providing a long-term benefit to towns and the local community.
