Brixton Granite Bench
Published 19th August 2013This wonderful and certainly intriguing granite bench was designed by Gross Max based in Edinburgh, and was commissioned by Transport For London.
Working closely with the engineers and architects involved in designing the Brixton town centre regeneration scheme, BBS was tasked with making a visit to China to oversee the manufacture of this seating. Our visit included written and photographic reports which were submitted to TFL, this gave a full history of quarrying the granite through to the production of the individual elements which make up the bench. The bench was supplied to the Brixton site which was being constructed by F M Conway and installed in sections over the course of a day. The G654 granite used for the bench was quarried from the Fujian Province in South East China.
The completed site was opened by Boris Johnson on 26th February 2010 and was the focal point of a very impressive scheme
